I often need this to convert government public domain publications to word docs.

In fact I recently got this question… which is something we all need to know.

Hello Debra,
Quick question I can’t recall what PDF editor you strongly recommended,it among other things converted PDFs to word. You had recommended it in an email awhile back.

Thanks,
Mark

Best PDF to Word Converters:

Free Trials for paid products

Abbyy PDF Transformer – This one took over an hour to download – Yikes! This thing is HUGE – it looks like it has a ton of options for foreign (other than English) options. (It’s installing something called Abby FineReader Pro 10)

The installation also took much longer than I thought.

It pushed to have a pdf convert (the same pdf I used for all the tests) and the program hung-up. I can hear my computer is running hard.

Whooops – it says the document is protected and won’t convert – I did convert the same document in all my other tests – no problem…

UNInstall!

Able2Doc Pro - This one worked really good… free trial is for 7 days and only allows 3 pages of content conversion at a time. Didn’t take long to download – the help buttons to start using right away were instant. No learning curve.

I tried this Free converter http://www.pdftoword.com which emails you the word doc.  – which I received in about 1 minute and it was “perfect”.

I’ll take free over paid any day as long as it works!

Hi Debra,

For Linux users, PDFedit works like a champ (even on my older single core), and has a ton of powerful features. Of all my PDF “surgery” tools, this one’s by far my favorite.

Best regards,

Mark

Debra, I don’t need to worry about this. I bought Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro which will do both for me. It is great.

Hi Debra,

I agree as to the NitroPDF converter and wrote about it myself on my freebie blog (which is currently being updated and integrated into my network) back in 2009. You can see the post here if you’d like… http://freebies.lindasmoneynetwork.com/2009/06/01/free-pdf-to-word-online-convertor/

I also have an older version of Adobe Acrobat 7 that I use for PDF files, haven’t gotten around to upgrading to the latest version since I haven’t found the need to. Eventually when I get my new computer I’ll be using Open Office (open source software) which is free and will do PDF conversions etc.

There are many open source and free online converters for just about everything these days. Why spend money if you don’t have to? ;)

Debra,
I have been using Abby Transformer 3.0 for over 6 months and have never had it hang up. Its conversion accuracy is about 98%. It keeps text and images in place and makes editing in Word quite simple.

Thanks for this tip Debra – I’m with you, I use free whenever I can ;-) I have used PDF to Word in the past with great success. I have also tried some paid products and have found that for my purposes, some of the free software programs work just as good.

Thanks too for that Techbliss link – I love looking at new tools and that is quite a list!

Hi Marilyn… So Adobe Acrobat 9 works well for you? Is it expensive? debra

Debra, I paid $112 plus $4 shipping and handling for mine. I bought it on eBay. If you are willing to wait until you get it for your price, eBay is a nice place to be. I don’t mind if I don’t win. I will keep going back until I get what I want at a reasonable price. The guy I bought mine from catinmychair doesn’t seem to have any right now. I went an looked and there is 1 potential possibility. It all depends what everyone put on their max. Good luck

Debra,
I use OpenOffice by Sun Microcomputers. It’s an open source productivity suite of applications. It’s free and comparable to Microsoft’s Office 2007 product. It has a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, database and drawing application. The word processor application has an option to export to PDF. It works great. Again this product is free. Definitely worth trying (www.openoffice.org). I’m sold. No more Microsoft for me.
