New Blog Ranks With Public Domain Content

July 10th, 2010 · 8 Comments · Case Studies

I’ve been busy at work on some new micro niche sites that use Public Domain content to get high rankings in Google.  :0)

Recently – I helped a friend get her first affiliate site online.  I used the Blog In A Day system for this new site (I’ll show you the site in a bit).

This gal has been working in Internet Marketing for about a year and guess what she has made income wise? $1.14.  That’s it.

She has spent a ton of money to learn (including our Public Domain Treasure Hunter’s Survival Kit) and just couldn’t put the “pieces” together in her mind to get going.

This friend does not live near me – so I couldn’t sit her down and “show” her the mistakes she was making.

The alternative was to just show her as I was building a site for her. This way she had access to the inside of a WP blog and the set up I used as I was building out the site.

I did some keyword research and gave her a few options. She picked her favorite and I went to work. It doesn’t take much work really… because these little micro-niche sites are fast and easy to set up.

CoolARoo Sun Shades is the keyword phrase she liked.

I got the domain name – and installed WP – etc.

After a few days (I was taking a long time – so she could see the process) I threw on some Public Domain content. I found public domain content on Google Books by using search terms such as “arbor” and “patio”.

This is what is funny – She was horrified at the content. I didn’t format or reword it “at all” except to add in the keywords related to the niche.

I added a few pictures and then let it percolate to see what Google did with rankings.

Google loves content… and they ranked her site on page one of Google withing 24 hours.

Once I knew that Google was going to “show us the love” – I made the site look nice and put in relevant content for the product line she is selling as an affiliate.

After just a few days she is having visitors to the site… No sales yet – but I will expect that to start happening soon.

Now that the site is at #9 – I’ll wait a few days and see if it rises. If not – I’ll use some linking strategies to get it to at least #3.

So… what new micro-niche site have you built with Public Domain content?

Let me know… I would love to share ideas.

Debra, This is my first time looking at Public Domain material and your website. I think I need a sticky note to tell me the dates that apply to different public domain material (ie books, photos, etc…) and then find some microniche’s to see how far I can get with this info.

    Hi Paul,

Here are the general guidelines we follow…

    1) Anything published in the U.S. before 1923 is in the Public Domain.
    2) Anything published in the U.S. between the years 1923 – 1963 is in the Public Domain if NOT registered for copyright renewal 28 years after publication.
    3) Anything produced by an employee of the U.S. Federal Government while in the course of performing their official duties is in the Public Domain.

As you know, people have been brewing their own beer for a long, long time ~ there’s lots of great information in the Public Domain regarding this.

    Hope this helps!

Logan, thank you. Sorry for the link drop. I’m sure I could find the info through a simple Google search but I figured hey, why not go to the experts. Are we talking the same dates for pictures/images?

Hi Paul, no worries. About pictures / images, the same rules apply.

    Debra & Logan
I purchased your Treasure Hunters Kit back in May or June. I have read it cover to cover. Recently I had some glitch on my computer and some things have disapeared and the Kit is one of them. I did not have a back up and I would really like to go back ove some of the infromation. Could you please send me the download link once again. This time I will make a back-up. I think I made the pruchase with my husbands credit card (David Wilson) 16653 Flintrock Falls Lane and I used this email address.
    Thanks for you help

    Hi Logan

I’ve found a real cool stuff in your site. One question however, what about the a person in UK using US public domain materials?

    Hi there,

I’ve addressed this in a ton of detail. A person living and operating in the U.K. can certainly republish Public Domain material from the United States, you just have to verify it’s copyright status in the U.K. as well.

Here’s two articles you may find helpful…
