I remember the feeling of “overwhelm” when I first started to learn about internet marketing. There were times I felt so “dumb” it was gut wrenching. I couldn’t learn fast enough and it wall ALL so confusing.
I kept reading about how simple it is to make money online… but for the life of me – I could not find the simple parts. Not one thing seemed simple or easy.
I’ve always been impressed with those who can take overwhelming tasks and handle them with ease and never break a sweat. It just never seemed to work that way for me, until I discovered the secret for tackling those daunting tasks.
The secret is simple: make things simple!
It’s like a cooking recipe.
- Find a recipe you want to try,
- Make a shopping list of ingredients,
- Go shopping and buy all the ingredients,
- Follow the step-by-step instructions.
- You end up with a perfect meal.
But… if you waiver – The results are going to be horrible...
- Don’t bother with a recipe (heck, you know what you want it to taste like… right)?
- Use what you have in the pantry… substituting with ingredients that don’t make sense.
- I don’t have time to shop… I’ll just wing it.
- Forget instructions… this should be easy. Pour every thing in at one time and in an hour we’ll eat!
- You cry over the brick that was supposed to be meatloaf.
Okay… so we all know we should follow instructions. But where do you find the instructions? And… which of the millions of instructions should I choose to follow?
Oh – and did you notice - recipes are broken down into a simple step-by-step system? You would never think about mixing the nuts into the eggs when following a brownie recipe… The system has an order to follow.
Now… take the recipe example and apply it in your business. Just about every major undertaking has things that can be simplified into a handful of “core” components. That makes them manageable.
Manageable means you will be more productive simply because you can work on something that seems accomplishable. And when productivity goes up, desired results come.
One of my coaching students wanted a simple- easy- step by step plan that she could follow. I can’t really give that… No on can. Why? Because every business is different. And every new business owner is different.
But… What if she had asked me to list the top three things she must concentrate on? Which one of these should be on the list?
- Is it product development?
- Learning to set up a blog?
- Keyword research?
- Social marketing?
- Reading and answering ever important email?
- Setting up a list?
- Just to name a few….
She wants things simplified. She knows the secret to success is getting things down into manageable
chunks.
So, what should you concentrate on when starting to build an internet business?
There are three things – and three things only – that you need to concentrate on with your business…
1. Offer Development.
You cannot make money online unless you have an OFFER. It’s that simple.
Unless there is some way for income to be generated, you can’t get paid. End of discussion.
Every business is founded upon a revenue-generating offer. Now, this can either be your own offer (small reports, ebooks, membership sites, coaching/consulting, advertising, etc.) or something you promote as an affiliate and earn revenue for referred sales.
2. List Marketing.
The fortune is in the list. You’ve heard it an untold number of times in the past, right? Building and profiting from opt-in lists should be a major priority on your schedule. You need to devote yourself to attracting new subscribers and then getting all of your subscribers to spend money with you … by purchasing your
OFFERS (see #1 above).
3. Traffic.
The third and final thing you need to concentrate on is “traffic”. This includes both traffic GENERATION (getting visitors to a site) and traffic CONVERSION (getting that traffic to buy). This includes things like:
- starting an affiliate program,
- buying PPC ads,
- participating in joint ventures,
- utilizing viral marketing tools,
- raising your visitor value,
- tweaking your sales pages,
- etc.
With each of these categories, you have a variety of options to choose from in directing your attention. It would be foolish for me to say “grow your affiliate program” as your number # traffic activity since I don’t know if you even have your own product to sell. That’s why I don’t recommend specific activities, but rather three key categories of business-building.
With each of these categories, find 2-3 activities to work on each week and you should see results in a short amount of time.
I admit I don’t always follow a regimented schedule… I should, but I like to mix things up from time to time.
I do have certain things that I do like clockwork. Every day I have a list of things
- That MUST get done
- That Need to get done – but could be put off a day or two
- That Should get done – I often look for ways to get my Virtual Assistants to do these.
- That probably isn’t something that ever needs to get done… and if it gets pushed along to the bottom of the to-do list often enough – I know it’s not important. (Trash it!)
- I’d like to do or try – These things float along and get plugged in eventually.
Now this doesn’t look very organized – but after several years and some training from some very good coaches… I’ve learned what works for me.
I suggest that you take that entire to-do list and turn it over once a day. For 2 or 3 hours a day – ignore the list.
Let’s just say you worked on an Offer for 2 or 3 solid hours one day… List Marketing on the next day and Traffic Generation on the next. During those 2 or 3 hours you don’t have to “complete a task”. You just have to commit to working on just that one task.
You will be surprised at how much you can get accomplished, but just chipping away at each of these three things.
In a nutshell -
- Find an offer to promote. (Either your own product or someone else’s)
- Setup a list to promote the offer.
- Drive traffic to the list opt-in page.
