In this information age, people are now more than ever sharing their personal stories with others. This can be for many reasons, from networking to purging painful memories to sharing helpful advice and resources to genealogy.
The public domain holds a wealth of knowledge in the form of many interesting stories shared by ordinary people. The form that the stories take can range from personal blogs and web pages to published autobiographical and biographical works. People can share anything they like on any topic. Just by doing a search using a popular search engine, viewers can find stories they relate to in just a matter of minutes.
So why did (do) people want to share their personal stories with others in such a public way? It is human nature to seek out and find others – especially those that share something we can relate to. You feel a sense of belonging. More than anything, people want to be able to express themselves and be heard by others.
It validates us as human beings that we have something important to say and that others are willing to listen. That’s why blogging and social networking sites like Myspace and Facebook have rapidly grown in popularity.
Since humans first realized they could communicate their ideas to others, they’ve enjoyed this form of expression.
Primitive man began by drawing on the walls of caves pictures depicting important events. Successful hunts, the birth of children and death became topics to tell others through drawings and stories told around the campfire where ever humans gathered.
The passing down of stories has been a part of history as families passed down one tale after another to future generations, often designating an important leader of the family to handle this role. Being able to tell a good story is a gift so therefore being able to recall and share stories has been given a high place in society.
Now thinking about the present, the public domain is one of the best places to find personal stories. You can use these stories to share with others, to create information for written works or web page content. Some even use the words themselves as a form of art, holding spoken word events and drawing from the stories ideas for their own books or poetry. The stories can even inspire others to create music and art.
However you use stories found on the public domain, you can always find inspiration and encouragement from reading other people’s stories. Words are uniquely powerful; therefore the stories themselves can take on a life of their own and create positive change to the reader.
