How To Write A Blog Article

Let’s think about a blog for a minute. Any blog.

Isn’t a blog a collection of articles?

In the baby stages of blog publishing… we have one or two articles and everything is starting to look great. Once we have a few years of blogging under our belt… the blog starts to gain some real status and is now as large as library shelf worth of content.

We should of course think about navigation in our blogs. How will readers move around from article to article? As a publisher – you may feel that your blog is about making money to increase your income. But… to the reader – it’s all about the content and how well you can answer their questions. If you have done your job right… the reader will happily be purchasing the products you recommend on your blog.

Anyway… articles are the key to keeping your readers happy, right? Blog articles come in different forms, shapes and sizes. Let’s spend some time together looking at how to write a blog article:

  • You can write personal blog articles… much like a daily journal.
  • You can write opinion articles… much like a newspaper editorial.
  • You could write review articles… reviewing products that you really like – or brand new products on the market.
  • You should add graphics to your articles to give them a visual punch – and of course use the alt tags for more Google juice.
  • How-to articles are very popular – in any target market.
  • You might even want to write news articles similar to a newspaper article… or feature articles similar to a fashion or decorating magazine article.

You can see that you have lot’s of choices when writing blog articles… and really, you can combine all of them in one blog. It’s your blog…

Back to the question… How to write a blog article:

Much like any journalism class would teach… a blog articles should have a beginning – a middle – and a conclusion.

If you can swing it.. it really should have a graphic or two. This breaks up the content and makes it easier to read.

Blog articles seem to be easier to read, if the paragraphs are short – they include bullet points – and if the important points are highlighted in some way. Most readers skim an article first to see if it’s really going to answer the question they have on their minds. Bold, Italized, or Underlined text makes it much easier to skim. Adding a bit of red now and then never hurt an article. :)

The length of a blog article is really up for debate… 300 to 500 words is the general rule of thumb. But… a blog article should really only be long enough to get your point across.

Giving your blog article a great title is also important. Two theories about blog titles are very popular:

  1. Keep it short and keyword rich to entice the search engines.
  2. Make it provocative in some way to attract the readers.

I struggle with this… and have come to the conclusion that using both methods usually works for me. Some blog articles (like this one) are easy to title with a short – easy to read – title… but some of my articles will have 10 or more words. They will include something that is usually an “feeling” I’m having at the time. Like “Wish I had one of these…” or “When will I ever learn not to…. “.

Blog articles should have links in them. That’s a short but powerful statement! Linking to other articles within your blog that are relevant to the subject at hand… just makes sense. The reader loves to find more “stuff” to read… and the search engines love to find lots of linking going on.

In conclusion (you don’t have to write in conclusion at the end of your articles… but I wanted you to get the point) learning to write a blog article is more than just writing down thoughts or opinions. Of course… knowing how to write in a way that’s engaging is an art. Learned from – well- writing… a lot.

But a blog article is more than just writing great content. It’s about putting it all together in an attractive way that makes the reader want to “read” your great article.
