Hi Marie-Lousie,

Here's a link to the full text of the original "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" book that you can distribute to your mates if that helps...

http://www.gutenberg.org/files/55/55.txt

Quick crash course in Public Domain (from a U.S. perspective)...

~ Anything published in the U.S. before 1923 is Public Domain in the U.S. and countries that follow a provision in international copyright law known as "the rule of the shorter term" (as is the case with Australia).

~ Anything published in the U.S. between 1923 and 1963 in which the copyright owners failed to renew copyright protection 28 years after publication is in the Public Domain in the U.S. and countries following the rule of the shorter term

~ Anything published in the U.S. before 1978 NOT containing a valid copyright notice is Public Domain in the U.S.

Unfortunately, nothing from "The Wiz" musical is in the Public Domain so far as I know. You'd have to seek permission from whoever owns the rights currently to use material from the show legally.

Hope that helps.

Thank-you, we are seaching now for a copy of the book for all of us to read, I have already found out that the slippers were in fact silver, can't wait to find out more . We are so excited that we can perform it. and I am very pleased I found this site. As I was hitting a brick wall for weeks. thanks again.
Just a quick question do you know if the music from the WIZ with michael jackson is under copyright. We Know we can't use follow the yellow brick road and the WIZ did a song ease on down the road?

Hi Marie-Lousie,

You won't have any issues with what you are doing as long as the new script is based on elements of the original Wizard In Oz book. You just want to make sure that you are not copying any elements from the actual movie (which is still under copyright protection) that may not be in the original book.

Hi Ruth,

I guess we've never really stated any policies or procedures in reference to this particular topic ; )

I think what you are asking me is if it's ok to use the book cover images in this "Oz" post?

If that's the case ~ certainly! The books are in the Public Domain and so are these images, use them as you see fit.

Thanks Ruth!
